The Mi'kmaq Nation Education Department offers educational support to all students regardless of age. The goal of the department is to make sure each student receives the educational support and encouragement that is needed to become successful students. To reach this goal, the Department offers a number of programs to assist students.
INTENT TO APPLY PUBLIC NOTICE
The Boys & Girls Club of Presque Isle in partnership with MSAD #1 intend to submit an application to the Maine Department of Education for a 21st CCLC grant. The grant will support an academic-focused after school program for students at the Boys and Girls Club of Presque Isle. If you have any comments on the proposed program, please contact Nichole Francis at 207-764-1972 or via email at fjones@micmac-nsn.gov. A copy of the application will be available for public review after submittal at the Boys and Girls Club of Presque Isle.
Johnson O'Malley
The Johnson O'Malley Program is a supplemental educational program enacted in April 1934 to meet the specialized and unique needs of eligible Micmac children attending public schools. The JOM Program does not replace the regular school programs but supplements programming offered by the schools. The main objective of the JOM Program is to keep Micmac students in school and to provide services that will enhance their overall educational experience.
Services provided by the program are tutors, career and enrichment opportunities, the monitoring of student academic progress, the distribution of school supplies to supply information to students concerning scholarships & higher education opportunities.
Title XII Indian Education Formula Grant Program
The purpose of the Indian Education Formula Grant program, is to assist the Mi'kmaq Nation in providing Micmac students with the opportunity to meet the same challenging State standards as all other students, while meeting the unique educational and culturally related academic needs of Micmac students.
Services provided by the program are tutors, career and enrichment opportunities, the monitoring of student academic progress and to supply information to students concerning scholarships & higher education opportunities.
Note: (This program is run by the Tribe in Presque Isle and Caribou. There is a Title VII program in Houlton that is run by SAD #29. The reason that this program is not run in every town is because there is a requirement that at least 10 Native American students be enrolled in the school.)
Adult Education
Purpose
The Mi'kmaq Nation Education Department operates under the guidelines detailed in 25 CFR Part 46 for the Adult Education Program and will support local projects or programs designed to:
- Assist Micmac adults in the acquiring of basic educational skills, including literacy;
- Support Micmac adults as they continue their education through the secondary school level;
- Establish career education projects intended to improve employment opportunities;
- Provide educational services or instruction for elderly, disabled, or incarcerated Indian adults;
- Prepare individuals to benefit from occupational training; and
- Teach employment-related skills.
Vocational Education
Purpose
The Mi'kmaq Nation Education Department will assist Indian students in acquiring job and educational skills necessary to acquire and maintain full-time satisfactory employment. Measures of assistance include, but are not limited to: grant awards for a student's demonstrated unmet financial need, assistance in applying for scholarships, counseling, and guidance. The Micmac Adult Vocational Training Program operates under the guidelines of 25 CFR Part 27.
Higher Education
Purpose
The Mi'kmaq Nation Education Department operates under the guidelines detailed in 25 CFR Part 40 for the Higher Education Program and will assist Indian students in acquiring job and educational skills necessary to acquire and maintain full-time satisfactory employment. Measures of assistance include, but are not limited to: grant awards for a student's demonstrated unmet financial need, assistance in applying for scholarships, counseling, and guidance.
Library
Purpose
The Library has two goals, the first is meeting the reading material needs of the Tribe's youth and the second is to establish itself as a resource center for Mi'kmaq Native American reading materials throughout the state.
